Get thee to a gunnery?

I must admit, I am more than a bit flummoxed by the recent surge in gun runs. As a response to President Obama's proposed policies and the ever-plummeting economy, large quantities of conservatives are rushing out to buy handguns, shotguns and rifles. "Right" minded people are scurrying from store to store frantically searching for a stockpile of unlabeled bullets.
Sorry to pull a WWJD on you, but seriously, can you imagine Jesus frenetically stockpiling weapons and searching for ammo without serial numbers?

Personally, I am struggling with equating "Compassionate Conservatism" with stocking up on ammunition.

Any thoughts?

  1. i'm actually planning on getting a handgun when i turn 21 this april. not because i'm "right" minded but just because I'd like to take advantage of that freedom while i still can. I personally don't think it's going to last very long.

  2. Well..this is a tough one...I think that people want to be able to protect themselves and their property (depression=increase in crime, services will be cut that protect you due to low economy etc.) Also it's human nature, if you tell people there won't be something-they will stockpile. Imagine if it was cigarettes-people would be stockpiling like crazy...(this is bringing a certain Seinfeld episode to mind too :-))The reason why people are stockpiling ammunition is because he wants to raise the tax on it 500%. I just think we need to have our freedoms and get the gov't out of our business. I don't like big government. (I personally am a registered independent. I vote issues, not people) But hey...what do I know.

  4. I'm not a huge fan of the stockpiling either, but I'm just scared of guns. Rightfully so I think; my stepdad used to carry one everywhere- i'm talking soccer games and all. I avoid them as much as I can!

Let's just hope the people stockpiling guns and ammo aren't linked to the surge in alcohol purchases!!!!!

  5. I don't really know what to say here. Your blog really made me think about a more subjective topic; sharing political views. Though I've always taken political stances very seriously, and have taken the time to educate myself on them, I have never enjoyed discussing politics or specific issues publicly. I feel like discussing, debating, or even arguing only strengthens the other's view point. It makes the other person partaking in the 'conversation' even more convinced than before (not that rhetoric is necessary). Not to mention, the odds are that you’ll alienate yourself, or even tick the other person off which then results in a verbal mess. I know there is no attempt at persuasion here, and I know it's important to voice your belief's, I guess I ..I just don’t know.

What I do know is that that the most profound thing that I’ve ever heard when it comes to sharing political views is a John Mayer lyric haha.
“Is there any one who / ever remembers / changing their mind from the paint on a sign? // Is there anyone who / ever recalls ever breaking rank at all / for something someone yelled real loud one time?”

I will say…I personally dislike guns.

  7. Darren,
I certainly wasn't trying to alienate anyone or tick anyone off. Sorry if that's what I accomplished. I also wasn't trying to change anyone's mind. I have just been thinking about the issue of guns and trying to figure it out. I was writing to collect my thoughts, to make people think, and to see what other people are thinking. If this is how I'm coming across, maybe I'll have to think about deleting this one.

  8. Wow...I'm not sure if you fully understood what I said: "I know there is no attempt at persuasion here, and I know it's important to voice your belief's." You really 100% misunderstood me; I was talking generally and only from “my” perspective of how “I” feel about “me” sharing my view because I wanted to comment on your blog. In no way did you offend, tick off, or make me feel like I was being persuaded in any way, and I'm sorry you took my comment as you did. I read the blog, thought it was great, and wanted to comment. I thought I was being clear that I was simply sharing what thoughts and feelings your blog brought to me (not opposing your blog). As you asked: "Any Thoughts?" I think your blog is great, I think everyone else’s comments are great, and I think it's great subject matter. That's why I took the “I” p.o.v. because I would like to share and discuss politics as you have and others who've commented, but my experiences and perceptions of when “I” do that - will not allow me. Do not delete this, you did not come across in any negative way, and I apologize that you took my comment that way. I hope this clears that up. I’m really looking forward to your next blog.

Ps. I’m with Andy: Jesus Rocks!
